FFAC Recap - Week 4: But Why

It only took a few weeks, but the NFL is already starting to have COVID issues. Honestly, some setbacks and rescheduling was to be expected, but based on how things are going even this week, the makeup of the season as a whole could be in jeopardy.

Now, before we press the panic button, remember that MLB encountered a similar situation in early August, yet were able to weather the storm and 2 months later, we’re well into playoff baseball. Of course, the NFL is a whole different beast by the sheer amount of personnel required to field a professional football team, and to be frank, this commissioner’s confidence isn’t exactly high on NFL leadership, but there’s hope to be had. Still, the league mask crack down and teams must stop making stupid decisions putting themselves and the season at risk.

That said, it’s an ongoing situation but let’s talk about Week 4. (Also don’t forget to listen to this weeks podcast).

Recap

Some more injuries, and COVID, and postponed games really did a doozy on half the league. It’s really feast or famine, as this week half the matches were within 8 points, and the other half consisted of at least 30 point blowouts. I mean, heck, we saw our first sub 100 points scored victory! On top of that we no longer have any winless nor undefeated teams.

And that’s where we’ll start, as Shelby has worked her way back to 2-2 after an 0-2 start, with a 99.9 - 92.24 victory over Jay. As mentioned, it’s the first time this season a team scoring fewer than 100 points wins a match, even though it was .1 under. Still a fun little tidbit. Some big hurt for Jay as his outlook gets a little less rosy with injuries to Chubb & Ekeler, but Hunt on his roster helps weather that injury storm a little bit.

Stefan continues to prove me wrong this season and appears to finally be putting together a respectable fantasy season, as he crushes MJ by 46 points, his 2nd time holding the blowout title and high score this season. MJ, on the other hand, seems to be trending back to old habits. Be it bad luck or overthinking it, 1-3 isn’t great, but not time to panic yet either with half the league at 2-2, but I don’t like this trend.

Ben bounces back from a Week 3 loss and takes down Ryan, moving back to #1 overall at 3-1 (Adam and Cody are the other 2 3-1 teams). Ryan joins the masses at 2-2, but shouldn’t feel too bad, this was one of the closer matches of the week.

Yet, not quite as close as the 2 aforementioned. Cody also bounces back from a Week 3 loss, and hands Adam his own first loss of the season. Now both are 3-1, but it was one of the closest matches in league history, a 0.22 win (Shiv beat Kelly in 2017 by 0.16 in that season’s Week 4, how bout that).

The other 2 blowouts is Zach beating yours truly by 34 and Kelly (!) beating Fireball by 32. Now, Fireball only put up 73.3 points so it’s not like Kelly’s team had a major break through, but considering these are the 11 and 12 seeds, it was an important win for Kelly to remain alive in the league. Zach and I shore up the 2-2 teams.

Stats

Avg Margin: 21.22
Biggest Blowout: 46.46 (Stefan, 2x)
Closest Match: 0.22 (Shelby)
High Score: 140.8 (Stefan, 2x)

Avg Score: 104.24
Best Player: 39.1 (Stefan 2x, Joe Mixon)

Week 5 Preview

I am not even going to attempt the lines this week. Injuries and a potential Bills v Titans postponement (or non roster players playing a game) will make for likely a wild Week 5, so cross your fingers for yourselves if you can. However, lots of 2-2 action, as expected, so here are my picks.

MJ v Zach - MJ
Ryan v Stefan - Ryan
Jay v Ben - Ben
Cody v Shelby - Cody
Adam v Kelly - Adam
Danny v Fireball - Danny

Once again, truly, thank you for your patience last week. Good luck, someone make a trade already.

- Danny
